We talk all things social prescribing with Centric Media
08 Jan 2021
Our Founder, Sirinda Bhandal, was invited by Centric Media to chat about her favourite subject – social prescribing!
Sirinda talks to Douglas Hamandishe from Centric Media, and takes us back to when she first started working for Voluntary Action Sheffield more than 25 years ago. As a charity we helped people access community services to help with whatever difficult life situation they found themselves in – whether living with domestic abuse, needing shelter or dealing with drug and alcohol addiction.
This is – and was – social prescribing, and is something voluntary and community groups do every day up and down the country.
Often people coming in to enquire about volunteering often had personal issues or support needs that they needed help with, so we’d support them too before they were ready to volunteer and help others.
We weren’t ‘Link Workers’, or ‘Social Prescribers’ – but like most charities, we would take the time to sit with a person, listen to their story and find out what situation they needed help with. If we couldn’t provide it directly, we would refer them into other local community services.
